Ram Scion of Ikshavaku is the first book in the Ram Chandra Series by Amish Tripathi. This is a work of mythological fiction and fantasy. Ikshavaku was the founder of the Suryavansi dynasty, from which Ram belongs to. In this series, Amish had retold the most popular tale of the Hindu mythology, “The Ramayana”. The first three books of the series are about the three main characters in this series: Ram, Sita and Raavan. The most interesting thing about this series is that all these three books end at the same movement, and then the story will be continued from there in the fourth book.

This book takes place in 3400 BC. Ram was the prince of Ayodhya. On the day Ram was born, his father Dasrath has lost a battle for the first time in life. Since then people considered Ram as the reason for his defeat. Also, Raavan who has defeated Dasrath was now the wealthiest person in the world. This book follows his childhood and then when he becomes the chief of the police in Ayodhaya. The principal of Ram as chief was, that everyone in his capital should follow the rules. His thought was that, if everybody starts to follow the rules, there will be no crime in their territory. He has made everyone equal after the laws; even if he is poor or rich everyone will be treated equally. Later in this book, Ram went to exile for fourteen years with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman. In the last year of their exile, Raavan kidnapped Sita and killed their friend Jatayu. This book ends here, but some secrets are going to be unveiled in the next book.

This book is a fast-paced and exciting retelling of the epic tale. All the scientific references in the books of Amishverse seem very realistic; like the concept of Nagas and the Brahmastra. Altering the women characters shows a strong female perspective; like Manthara into a businesswoman and Sita into a warrior. Amish has an excellent narrative style. Also, it has some revelations and awful movements.

I’ll rate this book A- and suggest that if you’re looking for a mythological fiction book, then this is a must-read for you.
